Satyagraha House – A Favorite for Families in Johannesburg
About the Hotel
Historic Guest House
Satyagraha House, located in Johannesburg's Orchards district, is a guest house and museum that once housed Mahatma Gandhi in 1908. The property includes seven rooms spread across the original house, a cottage, and a new wing. Each room features a private bathroom with a shower, free toiletries, and views of the garden. Some rooms, like the Kasturba Gandhi suite, have parquet floors, fireplaces, and desks overlooking the vegetable garden. The Kallenbach Cottage offers two double bedrooms connected by a living room with a fireplace, ideal for families.
Vegetarian Dining
Satyagraha House serves a fully vegetarian menu, with no alcohol, in line with Gandhi's principles. The chef prepares dishes using vegetables from the on-site garden and organic local products. Guests can choose to dine in the main dining room, a rondavel, or outdoors in the garden. A degustation menu highlights five iconic South African dishes, including Soweto bread and Cape Town bobotie. Dinner reservations are required due to limited seating.
Wellness & Meditation
The guest house offers massages using Africology essential oils, available in-room or near a fireplace. Yoga and meditation sessions can be arranged in the garden or on Gandhi's mezzanine. The museum includes a spinning wheel, portraits of Gandhi, and his personal belongings, such as his iconic round glasses. Guided museum tours are available daily at 11 AM and 3 PM for 80 rands per person.
Johannesburg Access
Satyagraha House is a 10-minute drive from Gautrain Sandton Station and 20 km from O.R. Tambo International Airport. Nearby landmarks include Acrobranch Melrose (2.5 km), The Wilds (3 km), and Royal Johannesburg & Kensington Golf Club (2.5 km). The Orchards district provides easy access to museums, shops, and restaurants in central Johannesburg.
Gandhi-Inspired Services
The guest house operates with minimal ecological impact, reflecting Gandhi's values. Services include free Wi-Fi, heating, and ironing facilities. Private guided museum tours can be arranged. The property's vegetable garden supplies fresh produce for meals. Check-in includes access to the museum from 10 AM to 4 PM, with an admission fee of 200 rands per person.
